VSP® Lens Enhancement Changes
In an effort to simplify the lens ordering process for doctors and staff, and to align with market standards, the ophthalmic product formulary will be updated on July 1, 2018. Updates reflect market-based pricing, lens technology evolution, and simplification. Decided in collaboration with manufacturers, these changes help ensure that lenses remain competitive, relevant, and of high value to doctors, and that VSP members continue to have access to the best lens products in the industry.
Changes include:
- NVF A and NVF B product categories will be combined to create the new product category, NVF.
- Based on analysis and evaluation of the NVF categories, we’ve removed low-utilized products in both the A and B categories. The technology differentials in the remaining products were minimal; the categories were combined. Fees will mirror those associated with the former NVF B category.
- For anti-fatigue lenses within the Digital Single Vision category (i.e., Hoya Sync®, Eyezen+TM, Shamir RelaxTM, and Zeiss® Digital), the add-on code will automatically be applied to applicable products; no changes to the ordering process will need to occur.
- Patient co-pays for these options will increase by $10, along with a $2 increase in the doctor service fee.
- To reflect market prices and ensure VSP patients continue to benefit from their plan, Progressive designs listed below will be moved to a different Progressive category.
- These changes to reflect market-based pricing will result in a lower co-pay for VSP patients and a decreased reimbursement for doctors.
- Doctors can choose to dispense another progressive in the original category to ensure there is no change in co-pay and reimbursement.

- Select progressive lenses with low utilization have been removed from the formulary, and low utilized AR products have been removed but can still be ordered using the “lab choice” option.
